What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a form of therapy in which the practitioner uses manual methods to identify and treat mobility problems which can cause pain, discomfort and other difficulty.
Any loss of mobility can cause an imbalance in the patient’s state of health; this can effect not only joints but also nerves, ligaments and internal organs, and the effect may be felt not only at the site of the problem, but also elsewhere in the body.
Having made an initial physical examination, and discussed issues such as lifestyle, the osteopath locates and works on the specific areas which need to be stimulated in order to aid the body in bringing about its own recovery.

Osteopathy has two aims: not only to cure, but also to prevent problems.

What does osteopathy treat?

Osteopathy is complementary to conventional medicine. It treats what are known as, "functional", problems.
Examples:
- Orthopedic system: Sprains, tendonitis, back-ache, neck-ache, joint pain…
- Long-term effects of trauma: road accident injuries, fractures, sprains, falls and knocks…
- Nervous system: Sciatica, cruralgia, occipital neuralgia, brachial neuralgia…
- Cardio-vascular system: Circulatory problems in lower limbs, haemorrhoids, headaches, migraines…
- Autonomic nervous system: Tiredness, stress, sleep disorders...
- Digestive system: digestion problems, constipation, diarrhoea, bloating, gastric reflux, bilious attacks, acid indigestion...
- Genito-urinary system: Painful periods, irregular periods, chronic cystitis, "unexplained" infertility
- Ear, nose and throat: Rhinitis, chronic sinusitis, vertigo, migraines…
- Eyes: Tired eyes, convergence insufficiency, headaches…

Osteopathy can also be helpful in the following situations:
.Pregnancy and post-natal period: sciatica, back ache, knee pain, pelvic pain, joint pain, nausea, constipation, circulatory problems in lower limbs…

.Infancy: crying and irritability (especially when lying down), feeding difficulties, colic and wind, regurgitation, digestive problems, sleep disturbances, sinus and dental problems, blocked or runny nose, sleep problems, chronic ear ache, chronic bronchitis, plagiocephaly

.Orthodontic treatment.

Who can benefit?

The osteopath’s choice of treatments for each problem is based on the patient’s age and an assessment of his bodily state.
Osteopathy is appropriate for the new-born, children, adults as well as the elderly. It is frequently used by dancers, musicians and sportspeople.

What happens during a session?

A consultation lasts on average 45 minutes.
It consists of three parts:
- First, the osteopath asks questions about the patient’s symptoms and lifestyle.
- A detailed examination then enables the osteopath to determine the exact location of the pain and its cause.
- Finally, appropriate and pain-free techniques are used to eliminate the cause of the pain and stop it from recurring or progressing.

Advice is given at the end of the session to ensure that the benefits of treatment are maintained.
Consultations on an appointments basis.
