Every Tuesday night in Paris, Zap Music and the nightclub Au Sai Sai present the English singing activity for pro and amateur singers alike: John Meldrum and the Highlites. This is for those who love to sing out in harmony while clapping their hands and moving their feet to an authentic African beat.
John Meldrum, a prize-winning American singer and guitarist, has been directing international chorales in Paris since 1999, drawing on an eclectic mix of American, English and French music including gospel, rock and roll, jazz and African-inspired rhythms.
Rehearsals are fun, conducted in English and French and brought to life by acoustic guitar, congas and other instrumental accompaniment. John Meldrum and The Highlites concerts in the past years have included open air festivals around Paris, with up to 35 singers and musicians. The 2008 season was a smash with the group doing their first gig at a street festival in London, England as well as singing John’s song “Brother, Brother” with 250 singers in front of 1,500 people at the Voix sur Berges festival in Paris.
John's approach is to infuse sessions with both music and movement. "Hey guys, I want to see those happy feet!". And what the others say: "Singing and swinging at the same time ain't necessarily so easy!"
If you're a wannabe rock chick, peacenik or if you're searching for more of an audience than the rubber ducks in your bathroom, John Meldrum and The Highlites could be the musical outlet for you.
Come and sing your heart out on Tuesday evenings 8.00-10.00pm, AuSai-Sai, 4 rue Sainte-Beuve, Paris 75006 - Metro Vavin or Notre Dame des Champs. A fun evening of music and movement awaits. Plus it's a great place for a drink afterwards!
